Visitors get a close encounter with the National Zoo’s elusive hellbenders!

The first night of Boo at the Zoo was full of mad scientists, creepy costumes and spooky salamanders! As the sun set and the lab grew darker, our sleepy hellbenders wiggled out from under their rocks to greet the ‘morning’. They gave visitors a rare display of their secret nocturnal behaviors – swimming, crawling, floating, hanging, and of course, bending. Mad scientists were ranting about the lab’s ongoing research while colorful potions bubbled next to a snake-infested centrifuge. Some of our visitors posed for a picture next to the lab’s witch scientist, Marie Creepy.
